I hadn’t seen my neighbor in a while and when we did catch up over the fence, she told me that her daughter who is 11 years old was experiencing reading difficulties was falling behind in school and her self-esteem was being effected. She went on to tell me that she had spent around $2000 for private tutoring in an attempt to address her daughters poor reading skills. I asked her if the reading problem had been resolved and she replied no, it had not seemed to have helped in the long term. She asked me if I could shed some light on the why the tutoring had not really helped? I began to explain to her that many times trying to address a difficulty with learning (reading) on an intellectual level can compound the situation and make the person more tense and resistant to the task of reading, besides this approach only deals with the symptoms and not the core reason behind her difficulty.
I went on to tell that if we look at her daughters difficulty with reading from a physical point of view, one must take into account the lack of internal communication between the brain and the body. In simple terms if she has a poor functioning of muscle awareness in her eye muscles or another way to put it is a lack of internal communication between her voluntary eye muscle control and her brain she will find it difficult to read, retain information, concentrate and learn. The simple act of reading (moving the eyes from left to right across the page) will create huge amounts of physical tension over time and effect her self-esteem and more, she will probably try to avoid and not enjoy reading outright. Her Mother said that is exactly what she does!
I advised her to solve the difficulty for her daughter we needed to help her to gain conscious voluntary control of the eye muscles and check the level of motor and sensory connections and inputs. By improving a persons voluntary muscle control and function we liberate the brain from having to compensate for the inability of the body’s lack of control and in turn free up the brain to focus on the job of learning, concentrating and remembering. When the body functions better it reduces tension, resistance and improves ones overall abilities and self-esteem.
